The Plague

Contamination as a planetary disease

Public-space intervention from The Plague
Saturation / The Plague / Displacement of Painting: Public Spaces. Richard Prince Infested. EGGS – MAC, 2009.

The Plague addresses contemporary contamination through the metaphor of a disease affecting planet Earth. Inspired by James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis, which understands the planet as a living and self-regulating organism, the series suggests that industrial and commercial intervention has damaged the balance of Gaia and, with it, our own living environment.

This line of work records defining features of the present: plastic waste, toxic emissions, visual noise, advertising overflow, and the saturation of landscapes and bodies. Painting is the starting point, but its conceptual and physical limits expand into installation, intervention, objects, domestic rooms, public spaces, and rural environments.

The proposal establishes radical contrasts: nature versus contamination, Gaia versus degradation, art versus commodification, body versus virus. Non-conventional materials, especially printed waste and advertising residues, reveal how consumption operates as an agent that affects both environmental and cultural integrity.
